What can the Construction Industry learn from the process of ‘Growing Up’?.
As humans we have a remarkable capacity to learn and develop. From birth, through childhood and adolescence, to maturity. The progression is gradual, but continuous.

It would be very different if at major stages of our development, progress was interrupted and we had to start over with just a vague idea of what we had learned before.

Clearly the process would be slower and less efficient. If acquired knowledge was lost, we could not build upon it.

So, why do we interrupt the design process in construction when it is not necessary?

Integrated Project Delivery (IPD)
Using Building Information Modelling processes and tools it is possible to complete the 5 key stages of design in a single model.

Moving from one stage of design to the next in the BIM environment has been described as ‘model progression’ but the process is now more correctly defined as Integrated Project Delivery.

IPD gives operatives the opportunity to work in a single environment with the objectives of improving efficiency and eliminating errors.

This article examines IPD in more detail and highlights the benefits to the construction process.
